Welcome To Special Olympics East Midlands!
Special Olympics East Midlands is registered charity and part of Special Olympics GB, the countries largest provider of year -round sports training and competitions for people with Intellectual (learning) disabilities.
Special Olympics GB currently has 150 clubs and over 8000 athletes who participate in 26 sports.
In the East Midland we have clubs in Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire offering 14 sports. For more information on our Sports and Clubs click here. In the near future we hope to have new clubs in Northamptonshire, and Derbyshire so click here if you are interested in being an athlete or a volunteer.
Our mission is to provide sporting opportunities and training for children and adults with intellectual (learning) disabilities, to develop physical fitness and confidence, find new friends and experience the joy of being part of the Olympics community.
Our sporting programs are designed to allow athletes of all ages to learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. Events are modified where necessary to give athletes with severe disabilities opportunities for meaningful participation.
We work closely with the County Sports Partnership, Local Authorities, Mencap, other local organizations and our Special Olympics Clubs to encourage local and regional competition, and co-ordinate participation in national and international events.
At competition level we use a system of ‘divisioning’ that is almost unique in the sporting world. This brings athletes of similar ability together for competition, providing opportunities for success and achievement. All our clubs welcome new athletes and volunteers so why not select a sport of club (click here) and come and have a go.
